Construction and space industries keep PIRTEK USA tech on the jobsite … just in case
It’s 3 a.m., and the air is filled with the din of cement trucks lined up 10 or 15 in a row, pouring immense quantities of concrete. But someone else is there, off to the side: an on-call PIRTEK technician, standing by in case something goes wrong with one of the hydraulic hoses.
“It’s an insurance policy having someone right here, it’s cheaper for them in the long run,” said Hap Moran, an MSST with PIRTEK Space Coast in Rockledge, FL. “They’ve told us how much they appreciate us being there.”
Moran sometimes works the night shift – from 3 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. – providing the client an onsite presence in the event of a hose failure. The pouring can go on all night, sometimes running 12 to 14 hours as a convoy of trucks lays down multiple tons of concrete. As many as 100 trucks can go in and out of the site during one shift.
Throughout this process, PIRTEK provides a hedge against the potential of a ruptured hose jeopardizing the equipment and the operation.
“It’s preventative maintenance,” said Karin Ferretti, Franchise Owner of PIRTEK Space Coast and PIRTEK Daytona. “The clients are being proactive. If a hose fails, the concrete hardens very quickly. We’re there for them in a support position.”
The clients that use PIRTEK in this standby role – in both Brevard and Volusia counties – include construction and space-industry companies, pourers of large concrete pads.
But these on-call jobs aren’t all concrete operations: Sometimes PIRTEK shows up to support the massive hydraulic equipment that moves rockets at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. As the machines plod along transporting the rockets into position, the PIRTEK tech stands by and follows the activity. On a few occasions, the hoses have actually blown during this process, requiring the technician to perform a speedy replacement.
“It’s so much more cost effective for them to do it this way,” said Ferretti. “Otherwise, we’d have to come out to the site, go through security – it would take too long. Having someone right there prevents a lot of excessive downtime.”
